When the Skyview StormBots were created our vision was to build more than a robot which developed our own skills, but to also help build pathways for young kids and others in our community to be introduced to STEM learning and skills. Thus an important pillar of our team’s values is community service. Each student member of the Skyview Robotics Program is required to commit at least seven hours to community service projects each season. We are proud of our efforts to improve our community through our many outreach activities.
We partner with the Fort Vancouver Regional Library System and the Vancouver Public Schools to conduct STEM-related Maker Workshops for youth ages 8-13. These workshops explore a STEM topic by having the kids follow the engineering design process to make things fly and move. We conduct about four events a year either in person at a local library branch or elementary school or via Zoom online for more distant sites.
We partner with both FIRST Washington and the national FIRST Robotics Competition orgnizations to host the annual kickoff video livestream which reveals the new game challenge. We coordinate the pick up of the new “Kit of Parts” for about to dozen teams and play host to about 200 students from other teams who stay to join us in workshops hosted by our team members which dig into the rules and develop scenarios for game play and robot design.
In October 2021 the Skyview StormBots hosted the first live robotics competition since COVID lock down ended in person events. The StormBots coordinated the event at Skyview High School with WA FIRST which provided the field elements and officials for the 2020 game, Infinite Recharge, the last live action game before the COVID lock down. Storm Surge allowed the six local area teams to bring to life their dormant competition skills and reinstill the camaraderie of FRC events. Skyview plans to host more Storm Surges in the future!
Beginning in the summer of 2022 we have partnered with TopSoccer Vancouver to design and build adaptive devices to enable more kids to enjoy the world’s most popular game.
Skyview High School is a nationally certified Unified Sports high school. Our robotics teams support programs at school by mentoring students on their robotics team and bring our teams’ tee shirt shooting robot to their events in school spirit.
We partner with the Vancouver Parks & Recreation Department to maintain the nearby pubic park and playground.
We designed and maintain the website for the nonprofit organization that hosts the annual Klineline Kids Fishing Derby for both disabled and able bodied youth ages 5-14. More than 2,000 kids participate each year.
